What Is Adrenal Cancer?

Adrenal cancer begins in the adrenal glands, which sit on top of the kidneys and help regulate hormones in the body. Most adrenal cancers develop in the outer layer (cortex) and are known as adrenocortical carcinomas.

What Causes It?

Adrenal cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Age

  • Family history or genetic conditions

  • Smoking

  • Obesity

  • Exposure to certain chemicals

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound)

  • Lab tests

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

These tests help determine the type and stage of the disease.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain or pressure

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Fever

  • A feeling of a mass
