What Is Appendix Cancer?

Appendix cancer is a rare cancer that begins in the appendix, a small pouch connected to the large intestine. In some cases, cancer from other parts of the body may also spread to the appendix.

What Causes It?

Appendix cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Age

  • Family history or genetic factors

  • Smoking

  • Exposure to certain chemicals

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound)

  • Lab tests

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

These tests help determine the type and extent of the disease.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain, bloating, or discomfort

  • Changes in bowel habits

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • A feeling of fullness or a mass in the abdomen
