What Is Bladder Cancer?

Bladder cancer begins in the bladder, the organ that stores urine. It occurs when cells in the bladder grow uncontrollably and may spread to nearby tissues or other parts of the body.

What Causes It?

Bladder cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Smoking

  • Exposure to certain chemicals

  • Chronic bladder irritation or infections

  • Age and gender

  • Family history or genetic conditions

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Urine testing (urine cytology)

  • Cystoscopy (viewing the bladder with a small camera)

  • Imaging (CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound)

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Blood in the urine

  • Frequent or painful urination

  • Burning sensation when urinating

  • Lower abdominal or back pain

  • Changes in urination patterns
