What Is Brain Cancer?

Brain cancer occurs when cells in the brain grow uncontrollably. It can develop from different types of cells, including neurons and support cells (called glial cells), which is why there are many different types of brain tumors.

Brain cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Family history or genetic conditions

  • Prior radiation exposure

  • Exposure to certain chemicals

  • Weakened immune system

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (MRI, CT, PET scans)

  • Neurological exams

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

These tests help determine the type and extent of the tumor.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Seizures

  • Memory or personality changes

  • Difficulty speaking, seeing, or hearing

  • Loss of balance or coordination

  • Weakness or numbness
