What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer begins when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably. It most often starts in the ducts or lobules, which are responsible for producing and carrying milk.

There are different types of breast cancer, depending on where it begins and how it behaves.

What Causes It?

Breast cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Age

  • Family history or genetic mutations

  • Hormonal factors

  • Obesity and low physical activity

  • Alcohol use

  • Prior radiation exposure

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • A lump or thickening in the breast

  • Changes in size or shape

  • Nipple changes or discharge

  • Skin changes (redness, dimpling, or irritation)

  • Pain in the breast

If you notice any of these, it’s important to speak with your doctor.

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (mammogram, ultrasound, MRI)

  • Physical exam

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

Early detection plays a key role in treatment outcomes.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and stage and may include:

  • Surgery
