What Is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer begins in the colon or rectum, which are part of the large intestine. It typically starts in the inner lining and can grow through the layers of the intestine, sometimes spreading to other parts of the body.

What Causes It?

Colorectal cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Age

  • Family history or genetic conditions

  • Personal history of polyps or inflammatory bowel disease

  • Obesity and low physical activity

  • Smoking or alcohol use

  • Diet high in processed or red meats

How Is It Detected?

Early detection often starts with routine screening, which may include:

  • Colonoscopy

  • Stool-based tests (FIT, stool DNA)

  • CT colonography

Regular screening can help find cancer early—or even prevent it by identifying precancerous polyps.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Blood in the stool

  • Changes in bowel habits

  • Abdominal pain or cramping

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Bloating or nausea

If you notice any of these, it’s important to speak with your doctor.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the stage and may include:

  • Surgery

  • Chemotherapy

  • Radiation therapy

Your care team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan.
