What Is Esophageal Cancer?

Esophageal cancer begins in the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. It typically starts in the inner lining and can grow through the layers of the esophagus, sometimes spreading to other parts of the body.

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound)

  • Endoscopy (a small camera to view the esophagus)

  • Blood tests

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

These tests help determine the type and stage of the disease.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Chest or throat pain

  • Persistent cough or hoarseness

  • Heartburn or indigestion

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Nausea or vomiting

If you notice any of these, it’s important to speak with your doctor.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the stage and may include:

  • Surgery

  • Chemotherapy

  • Radiation therapy

Your care team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan.
