What Is Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer begins in the liver, an organ that helps process nutrients and produces bile to aid digestion. It occurs when liver cells grow uncontrollably.

Some cancers may also develop in nearby areas like the bile ducts or gallbladder, depending on where they originate.

What Causes It?

Liver cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Chronic liver disease (such as hepatitis or cirrhosis)

  • Alcohol use

  • Obesity or diabetes

  • Smoking

  • Family history or genetic factors

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound)

  • Blood tests

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

These tests help determine the type and extent of the disease.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain or pressure

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Swelling or a feeling of a mass

If you notice any of these, it’s important to speak with your doctor.
