What Is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer begins in the lungs, which are responsible for bringing oxygen into the body. It is one of the most common cancers in both men and women.

There are two main types:

  • Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) – most common

  • Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) – less common but typically grows faster

What Causes It?

Lung cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Smoking or secondhand smoke exposure

  • Air pollution or exposure to harmful substances (like asbestos)

  • Family history

  • Radiation exposure

  • Age and genetic factors

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (CT scan, PET scan, chest X-ray)

  • Lab tests

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

These tests help determine the type and stage of lung cancer.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Persistent or worsening cough

  • Chest pain

  • Shortness of breath

  • Coughing up blood

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Frequent respiratory infections

If you notice any of these, it’s important to speak with your doctor.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and stage and may include:

  • Surgery

  • Radiation therapy

  • Immunotherapy
