What Is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that begins in plasma cells, a kind of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. These cells normally help fight infection, but in multiple myeloma, they grow uncontrollably and can affect the bones, blood, and immune system.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Bone pain or fractures

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Frequent infections

  • Increased thirst or urination

  • Loss of appetite

  • Kidney problems

If you notice any of these, it’s important to speak with your doctor.

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Blood tests (such as a complete blood count)

  • Bone marrow biopsy

  • Imaging (X-ray, CT, PET scans)

These tests help determine the extent of the condition and guide treatment.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the stage and may include:

  • Chemotherapy

  • Radiation therapy

  • Targeted or other therapies

Your care team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan.
