What Is Pancreatic Cancer?

Pancreatic cancer begins in the pancreas, an organ that helps with digestion and regulates blood sugar. It occurs when cells in the pancreas grow uncontrollably.

There are two main types:

  • Exocrine tumors (most common)

  • Endocrine tumors (less common)

What Causes It?

Pancreatic cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Age

  • Smoking

  • Obesity

  • Diabetes

  • Chronic inflammation (pancreatitis)

  • Family history or genetic conditions

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound)

  • Blood tests

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

These tests help guide your treatment plan.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal or back pain

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

  • Dark urine or itching

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and stage and may include:
