What Is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is a common cancer in men that develops in the prostate gland. Most cases grow slowly, though some types can be more aggressive. It typically begins in the cells that produce fluids in the prostate.

What Causes It?

Prostate cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. While the exact cause isn’t always known, risk factors may include:

  • Age

  • Family history or genetic factors

  • Hormone levels (testosterone)

  • Obesity

  • Diet and lifestyle factors

How Is It Detected?

Early detection may include:

  • PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test

  • Digital rectal exam (DRE)

  • Imaging (CT, MRI, PET scans)

  • Biopsy to confirm diagnosis

These tests help guide treatment decisions.

Signs and Symptoms

Some men may not have symptoms early on. When symptoms occur, they may include:

  • Changes in urination (frequency, flow, difficulty)

  • Blood in urine or semen

  • Pelvic discomfort

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Pain in the lower back, hips, or thighs

If you notice any of these, it’s important to speak with your doctor.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the stage and may include:

  • Surgery

  • Radiation therapy

  • Chemotherapy

  • Immunotherapy

Your care team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan.
