What Is Gynecologic Cancer?

Gynecologic cancers are cancers that begin in the female reproductive system. This includes cancers of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, and vagina.

Each type is different, but all require personalized care based on the specific diagnosis.

What Causes It?

Gynecologic cancers develop from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • Age

  • Family history or genetic conditions

  • HPV infection (for cervical cancer)

  • Hormonal factors

  • Obesity or certain medical conditions

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound)

  • Lab tests

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

Routine screenings, like Pap tests, may help detect certain types early.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge

  • Pelvic pain or pressure

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Changes in urination

  • Unexplained weight loss

If you notice any of these, it’s important to speak with your doctor.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type and stage and may include:

  • Surgery

  • Chemotherapy

  • Radiation therapy

  • Immunotherapy

Your care team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan.
